Greta Baksa - Vintage Plum's June Guest Designer

We are so happy to have Greta as our June Guest Designer!  She has done an amazing job with Alphabet Soup so be sure to check out her work in the Design Team Gallery.

Here is a little bit about sweet Greta:

I'm a small town girl living in a big world, made smaller through online connections. I've learned from my grandpa and have remained a kid at heart, trying my best to find joy in the little things and always have fun. I still love to play with bubbles, jump rope, chase shadows, and read children's books. Other hobbies besides scrapbooking include photography, knitting, hockey, and just about anything outdoors. I treasure the friendships I've made through scrapbooking and love being a part of the Vintage Plum community.

TOILET PAPER IS NOT ONLY GOOD FOR WIPING YOUR.....

stamps off, it is also good for STAMPING ON!!! Maryangella told me about this!

(Wet Paper Embossed Cat by Kate Pullen)

I got online and found some instructions:

Wet paper embossing or casting is a highly effective technique that is quick and simple to do and is suitable for youngsters as well as adults A rubber stamp is pressed into wet tissue or toilet paper, leaving a raised image. When the paper dries, this subtle image is left and can be incorporated into many projects. Very little in the way of materials are required and although this is a quick technique several hours of drying time are required before the image is ready to be used. Although the finished image is fairly robust, as the paper is highly absorbent care needs to be taken not to wet the paper again.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Quick - but allow time for drying

Here's How:

  1. Tear off several sheets of toilet paper and place onto a deep plate or saucer. Wet thoroughly. The amount of sheets required will depend on the desired finished effect. More layers will give a thicker finish and are better for large designs. Start using 6 layers of double thickness toilet paper and experiment with variations.
  2. When the paper is thoroughly wet, gently press out any air bubbles as these will spoil the finished image. Take the paper and carefully lay it on top of the stamp.
  3. Using a soft dry cloth press the paper down onto the stamp until the image is clear.
  4. Gently peel off the paper from the stamp. The wet paper is quite fragile so handle carefully. Lay on a flat surface to dry.
  5. When the paper is completely dry, cut the waste paper away and color or use the image as required.

At this point, Maryangella used Glimmer Mist to get the colors and shades she wanted. Cool, uh?!

Oh yeah!  She made some WAY CUTE projects using this technique.

She is sending me some pics today and I will get them posted in the Some Assembly Required forum with the instructions attached!

So, be on the look out peeps!!!

Peace out!

We’re happy to announce that, as of June 2009, we will be releasing our kits on the 1st of every month! The 10th of each month will always hold a special place in our hearts, but truth be told, we had initially landed on that date as a result of the printing process for our custom Vintage Plum papers. We’ve got that all sorted out now and we’re ready to move this thing to the 1st.

So, with that big news out of the way, we’re pleased to present to you the sneak peek for our June 2009 kit, Alphabet Soup. This kit is chock full of hearty ABCs. There are three exclusive Vintage Plum papers, as well as, product from October Afternoon, Cosmo Cricket, Jillibean Soup and many more of your favorite vendors.  Alphabet Soup also includes some awesome Etsy goodies and a beautiful, handmade felt flower made by our very own Jessica Wilson.

If you have been eyeing the May kit, and you also want to get your hands on the June kit, now is the time to sign up for a 3-month subscription to ensure you receive the May kit at the $26.99 price.  I would get it quick though because we only have 10 May kits left!

Scrapper's Block?

Try a different medium....

I made this painting and I'm crazy inspired now!  Just wanted to share the thought!

Scrap on ladies!

Book it!

How inspirational is this window display?!  The decor is all made of books?!

Doesn't this just make you want to go to a thrift store and stock up on some vintage books?  Beth...I know you are shaking you head "yes"!  LOL!  I'm so inspired now!   I hope you all are too!  Can you imagine how wonderful these would look embelished with some goodies from this month's kit?!  *sigh*

Mini Idea...Remember that Tulle?

Remember that tulle we discussed?  Well I'm still rockin it!

For this mini, I layored the tulle between a chipboard letter cut out and a sheet of plain vellum to form a cover for this mini.

Then I put it all together with some scrap filler pages and used my bind it all to bind it together.

Easy Peasy!  Try it!  Layor that tulle with some vellum!  It's an awesome effect!

Melisascraps: Winner of VP's first online crop!

Congrats to Melisa Kreamer aka melisascraps who was the overall winner of Vintage Plum's first ever online crop. We also want to say thank you to everyone that participated in the crop and to all the sponsors that donated prizes.

Here is our interview with the lovely Melisa Kreamer:

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?

I grew up all over as my dad was in the military. I spent the largest part of my life growing up in Southern California.  I currently live in Aurora, CO

What are your nicknames?

My mom did not believe in nicknames  so I was always called Melisa.  I go by Mel or 'Lis and my dad and my uncle call me MAK.

 Any children or pets?
Neither of each. I used to have 3 beautiful Akita dogs but one passed away and I had to find other homes for the other two when I got divorced. Someday I will have a dog again and hopefully at least 1 child someday.

Where do you work? What would be your dream job?

I currently work in the youth recreation field, which I love. I actually went to school for recreation so it is nice to work in the field. I would love to be a full time scrapbook designer someday, but for now I love what I do.

Do you have any vacations plans for this summer?

No vacations planned this summer. Summer time is a pretty busy time for me at work. Although I am currently on vacation since my parents are out here for a visit so does that count?

What would your dream vacation be?
A week with my boyfriend on a cruise somewhere. Just to have time away from everything and have time alone with my boyfriend would be just amazing.

When someone cuts in front of you in line at the coffee shop, what do you do?
Well I don't drink coffee so not really sure what I would be doing in a coffee shop, but in general I am a pretty easy going person. If somebody really needs to be in front of me life is too short to make a big deal about it. Unless of course I've had a really bad day, then I tend to have no patience what so ever and I might just have to say something.

What got you into scrapbooking? When did you start?
I've always enjoyed preserving my memories. In high school I put together albums with construction paper and magnetic albums. In college, I learned how to preserve my memories in an archivally safe way. I feel in love with the creative aspect of being able to express my style and personality on the pages.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in scrapbooking?
Ithink my number one piece of advice is to NOT buy too much stuff at first. I have so much stuff from when I first started scrapping that I no longer use because I don't care for it anymore or my style has changed. Sometimes when you first start a hobby you wnat to own everything all at once that you can spend money on things you end up not needed or wanting. Once you learn what your style is and what techniques you enjoy using then you can begin to weed out the things you will actually use.

Is there any cosmetic product that you cannot live without?
Sunscreen and mascara. Being light skinned and in the sun most of the time, I have to have my sunscreen on. And being blonde, I have very light eyelashes. Without mascara I look like I have no eyelashes at all.

What is your scrappy space like? Neat or messy?
I try to keep my space neat, but when I am scrapping it tends to get pretty messy. I like to pull things out as I scrap and don't like to take the time to clean up until the end.

What is your favorite scrappy technique to use?
Lately I have been loving layering patterned papers. I am always up for trying new techniques or revamping an old technique.

If you won a lifetime supply of scrappy products from a company, which company would you want it to be?
There are so many great products out there I don't think I could pick just one line to work with. That is one of the great things I love about kits is that they bring together a whole group of different products.

Tell us something about you that most people don't know:
Most people don't know that I can wiggle my ears. It's not a trick that is needed very often, but it's fun.

And finally, what is your favorite thing about Vintage Plum?

I love the great online community over at Vintage Plum. There are so many great and talented people over there that are so willing to share their passions, techniques, and  style. I find the Vintage Plum site so very inspiring.

Here are a few of Melisa's wonderful projects that she made during the crop:
