My sweet hubby, Jason, thought of another AWESOME idea!!!!! As most of you probably know, Jason has been just a little bit busy so he hasn't been able to take our March papers to the printer yet. Luckily, they have a quick turnaround time.
With that said, we want YOU to be a part of one of our papers!!! The March kit has a tree themed paper that we are going to call Forest of Friends and those friends are you!!!
This is where you come in. We would like to have your first name (only if you want us to) as part of the background of the page. Because of the design of this paper, the names will be incorporated into a textured part of the background. Will every name be legible? We don't know yet, but it will be a part of the paper! This is just another way to say THANK YOU and to do what we like best and get YOU involved in what we are doing.
Here are the rules. We are taking first names only and no nicknames please. You must repond to this blog post by SUNDAY, MARCH 1ST at NOON cst and say the following:
I would love for my name to be part of the Forest of Friends paper. My first name is:
That's all we need!! Okay, I'm SO excited about this!!!!
Update: 02/28/09 11:54 CST
Jason's just finished creating the outline of the tree in Illustrator. Here's a look the tree shape that will make up the forest.

Jason has come up with a really cool idea for those of you who have been with us during our first month. It's something that will go on your profile so that when a new person finds us they will know you have been with us from the start! He is working on something for the Design Team girls as well. We so appreciate every single one of you and love your enthusiasm, support, encouragment, creativity, thoughtfulness...well, the list could go on forever.
Pretty much, we just want to say THANK YOU for being here and for being such an AMAZING group of girls!!
Love,
Jenny
We have shared with you before that we want to be an open and honest company and share the good, the bad and the ugly with you. Well, this is one of those times. When we started Vintage Plum, we decided we were going to ship with UPS. Our UPS driver is wonderful, friendly and prompt, however the real problem is that the cost of shipping has been unexpectedly very high.
As you know, we charge a flat rate of $7.50 no matter what you buy. Well, we have come to learn quickly that if we stay with UPS we will be losing money. I shipped out a couple of kits this week and the shipping fee was over $9.00. Yesterday, I was processing an order that will ship to another city in Texas (we are in Texas) and the postage was going to be over $10. Red flag! What is going on here? So, I call UPS and not only do they tack on a residential charge if the shipment goes to a house, but if they consider where the package is going is to a rural area then they charge another two dollar and some cent fee. Therefore, the shipping will be over $9 and $10 in those cases. On top of that, we have to pay a weekly fee for the UPS driver to come to our house everyday. That fee adds up quick. Whoa!
I knew there had to be a better solution. I called my local post office and they told me they had someone that works with small businesses and that he would give me a call. He called me right away and told me my regular postman will pick up my packages FREE of charge. He also said he would come to my house and setup my account to start shipping with them. Well, he came today at 10am and was very nice and helpful. He helped me get my account setup and showed me how to use their system. We do have the option though to pay a $15.95 monthly fee for some extra features and we have decided to do that. This beats the UPS weekly fee by a long shot!
Oh, and the package going to Texas is now less than $10. ☺
With all that being said, your kits will now be shipping with USPS. They do have tracking numbers and you will receive yours in your email when your kit ships. The mailman also picks up on Saturday, which is a bonus!
We hope you understand our decision to switch and if you ever have any problems with receiving your kit, please let us know. Instead of increasing the shipping fee or putting less in your kit to cover shipping cost, we have decided to go with the most economical way to ship your kits.
Go Post Office!
Love,
Jenny
Hey all,
Hope you are having a great evening. It's right about 10:15 CST and I've just finished adding some new functionality to the VP site. It's almost time to go catch Lost on the DVR. Now, on to the news. You'll find that when you add comments or create a post you now have a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. This little editor will allow you to add a bit of style to your posts. I also went ahead and moved the Smiley / Emoticons into this area to keep everything tidy. By default the icon set in this tool is not quite as fun as what we originally had so I'll work on getting that fixed.
The main feature of this new WYSIWYG tool is the ability for you to upload and attach images to comments. There should be a little picture of a mountain that's 3 spots to the left of the smiley face on the tool bar. If you click this little button it'll bring up a little window. Inside this window you can do all kinds of things such as upload an image, put a link around it, and decide what alignment it should have. If you click the "Browse Server" button when inside this window the File Browser shows up. This is basically a tool that allows you to not only upload images, but also gives you a catalog of images you've already uploaded to the site so that you can reuse them.
Instructions on how to upload an image in your post:
1) Click on the mountain button
2) You will then be in the image info tab
3) Click on browse server
4) Click on the upload ling
5) Click browse and select your image
6) Click the upload button
7) Click the send to FCK Editor link
I hope you find this tool pretty useful for using images in the forums and anywhere else you can post. We want you all to know that this site is really a living thing that you all can help shape. I'm a web developer by trade, so you can be sure that we'll always be committed to providing fun interactive experiences. We've got several ideas we're currently tossing around such as a sister site called "Jason Scrapbooks." This would be a video tutorial site for people wanting to learn how to scrapbook. Basically, we're envisioning an educational / humorous journey that documents my attempt to learn how to scrapbook. Good idea? Lame? Let us know what you think.
Additionally, there are some other site enhancements I'll be working on in the next week:
One last note, tonight I also finished converting Sarah's pencils to vector art in Illustrator for one of our March papers. This is good news as we'll be going to press in the next couple of days.
Nighty night,
Jason
Thanks for your order Jessi! We really appreciate it and can't wait to see all the cool stuff you make.
That's a great question about packaging. Currently, we are shipping our kits in a 14x14x4 box we have purchased. All of the big stuff like paper, cardstock, rub-ons, stickers, etc. are in a 15"x18" paper merchandise bag sealed with a Vintage Plum sticker. All the other little goodies like ribbon, paint, small embellishments, etc. are placed in a smaller merchandise bag and sealed with a Vintage Plum sticker.
Once those bags are in the box, we put Kraft paper in the box to help protect it all. The box gets taped up and is ready to head to your front door.
Oh, and in our FAQs section we have a note about any kit damaged in shipping: Notify us within 5 days of receiving your kit by sending an email to info@vintageplum.com. We will make arrangements with you to have the damaged kit returned to us and send a replacement kit to you. If we are sold out of that month’s kit, you will receive the following month’s kit when it is released.
I hope that answers your question, Jessi.
Thanks!
Jenny
I just wanted to send out a quick thanks to those of you who have already purchased our very first kit, Crush. We appreciate the support so much! We are very excited to see what all of you are able to do with our kit and we would love for you to send us pics of what you make! It is definitely a difficult time to be starting a new company, so we appreciate all of your compliments, suggestions and encouragement more than you know! We look forward to getting to know all of you better and thanks again for the continued support.

We've recently received several questions asking what we mean by "100% American-made Scrapbooking Kits." Personally, I'm glad that these questions are being asked of us because it means that you all are interested in this aspect of our products.
When we say American-made, we mean that we've gone as far up the chain as possible to make sure that the products we buy, and ultimately sell to you, are made right here in America. Here's all the components of our business that are made in America by American-based business.
This doesn't mean that everything our Vendors sell is made in America, but we've verified with the vendors that the products we buy are made here. We do want to point out that there are obviously lots of great products made overseas by many great vendors, and we understand that price sensitivity is what drives a large volume of production in that direction. However, we made a decision very early on that we would draw this line in the sand. We're Americans and we're going to support our country's creative and manufacturing industries by selling American-made products.
Hey friends, so I heard that there were some requests for a blinky. I have years of banner experience, but I'll admit this is my first stab at a blinky. So, before I release the code snippet for you to use this little guy, I'd like to see if there's any feedback. The longer you hang around here I think you'll see that we really love feedback. If you've got any thoughts / opinions on the blinky let us know and we'll incorporate what we can and then release a final version. One note, I created this in Flash. I know many of the blinkies out there are animated gifs, but Flash gives me better control as a designer and also yields a file with a smaller file size as well. Let us know if Flash is a no-go for you.
There's also been requests for some feature enhancements to the forum and user profiles. Thank you very much for the suggestions you all have been sending in. I'll start implementing some updates this week to address those issues.
Thanks,
Jason
UPDATE 2-24-2009
Glad you all like the blinky. Here's the code that you can copy and paste to use the blinky on your site! Let us know if you have any questions.
UPDATE 2-26-2009
As requested, here is 100px X 100px blinky. I adjusted the type size a bit to keep it legible. Let me know if you all want anything else!
Thank you to all of you who have shown interest in our design team so far! We realized tonight that Google changed something with their email system and we were not receiving emails that were sent to info@vintageplum. I have found a way around the error so, if you have already submitted your information, please send it to us again. We apologize for the inconvenience and can’t wait to see what you send our way.
** NERD NOTE ** If you are a techie like me and happen to use Google Apps for your domain, there is currently a problem with the way groups are being handled by the system. If you had attemted to create groups with the "All users within this domain" functionality it no longer works. Emails sent to a group created in that manner are currently bouncing. What you need to do is remove that option from the member list, and then actually choose the individual members you want to add. This is quite an odd deal because everything worked okay when I set it up and it's just suddenly stopped working for everyone. Here's a link to a thread of other users having the same issue: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Apps/thread?tid=6871e7db0d94c74a&hl=en
Thanks,
Jason
This adorable photo cube was designed by our one and only Sarah. She simply made it using a tissue box. Check out the step-by-step instructions below to make one for yourself!

Step 1: Get an empty tissue box
Step 2: Cut four pieces of scrapbook paper to approximately 5” (
x 4.5” (w) (depending on the tissue box) and find four (or more) pictures.
Step 3: Hole punch 3 holes on the sides of the four pieces of paper. Cut 12 pieces of ribbon; each piece being about 4 inches so that the ends of the knot are long. Join the pieces of scrapbook paper together, leaving one side undone so that it can later be wrapped around the tissue box.
Step 4: Use the ends from the “middle knot” to tie knots with the closest piece of ribbon from the “top knot” and “bottom knot.” This will form a knot in between the hole punches (as shown on the left side of the photo below). This will help cover the edges of the paper and keep the tissue box from showing through.

Step 5: Now that the pieces of paper are joined together, decorate each piece as desired.
Step 6: Cut out 16 hearts; about 1 inch in length. I cut out 8 white hearts and 8 black hearts
Step 7: Put the ends of four of the hearts together to form a “flower.”
Step 8: Cover the bottom of the tissue box (which will be the top of the photo cube) with a coordinating paper. It’s easiest to do this by placing the box on the back side of the paper and tracing a square about 1 inch larger than the box. Then decorate the top of the photo cube with the “heart flowers” and other stickers, etc.

Step 9: Wrap the joined scrapbook paper (now adorned with photos and embellishments) around the box and join together the last side with ribbon. Now you have your lovely photo cube!
